The Javan Woodcock inhabits damp montane forests of Java and Sumatra. It probes the forest floor with its long bill, and observations on Java recorded display behaviour at dawn and dusk.
It is a small woodcock with a long bill.
It searches damp montane forest for invertebrates. At Gunung Salak, Java, individuals were observed displaying at dawn and dusk.
At Gn Salak, Java, one bird observed in September 2013 called from a horizontal branch about 10 m above ground, then flew about 50 m to another tree and called again. It used the same gap and perch on all eight mornings.
This Gn Salak bird gave a three-part vocalization: a low growl, a sharp sneeze-like sound, and a long series of short “do-do-do” notes.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
