The Bornean bay cat is a rarely detected wild cat of Borneo’s forests. Records exist, but much about its diet and way of life remains unknown.
Its fur is usually chestnut-red, though gray individuals have also been recorded. It has a rounded head, small rounded ears and a long tail.
Camera traps were used to survey small cats in Sebangau, Central Kalimantan, from 2008 to 2018. Researchers also surveyed a second area, Rungan. All four small-cat species found on Borneo were confirmed at both sites, including the Bay Cat.
Bay Cat detections at Rungan were too limited for a detailed analysis of activity times. The authors noted that intermittent sightings might reflect the forest’s unprotected status. The species was among the three cats with flexible activity periods in the study.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
Bay Cat sightings at Rungan were intermittent, and the authors noted that the forest’s unprotected status might be related.
