This honeyeater is recorded in North Maluku. Its species account includes a song recording from eastern Morotai, and a 2010 field survey reported a bird on Halmahera.
A 2010 Halmahera field account described a simplex bird as dark grey, with reddish color restricted to the outer edges of the flight and tail feathers and pale grey-brown underparts.
The species account places it in forest habitats, describes it as sedentary, and classifies it as a nectar-feeder.
