Males have glossy black upperparts and upper breast with a white wing stripe. Females are grey where males are black, and juveniles have mottled buff-and-dark breasts.
It uses forest edges, gardens, parks, and mangroves. It forages on the ground in an upright hopping posture, often pumping its tail.
