With a black head and broad white cheek patch, this bird searches near the ground for insects in wet habitats of eastern Australia.
It has a black head and breast with a conspicuous crest; the white patch on the side of the face grows larger as the bird matures. Its body is dark olive-green, with a long tail and grey-white belly. Young birds are generally duller and have a smaller crest.
It lives in wet habitats such as rainforest, eucalypt forest, and dense scrub near watercourses, where vegetation grows close to the ground. It catches insects and other small invertebrates on the ground; a male's long call is often followed by the female's sharp notes.
The eyes are pale cream and the bill is black.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
