A large black bird whose male has a long chest wattle and an overhanging crest. Females are smaller, with a reduced or absent wattle.
The male is all black, with an overhanging crest and a long wattle hanging from the centre of the chest. Females and immature birds are smaller, with a reduced crest and a much smaller or absent wattle.
It feeds mostly on fruit, and males call and display at leks. At one confirmed nest in north-western Ecuador, the female incubated and provisioned the young; a male was not seen at the nest.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
