It lives in the understory of humid Andean montane forest and nearby wet scrub. Adults are mainly gray, while females can show more rufous areas and fine barring.
Adults are dark gray overall, sometimes with rufous on the rump and sides of the vent. Females may have more rufous and fine dusky barring.
