The Texas kangaroo rat hops on long hind legs and stores food in burrows in grassland. A white tuft at the end of its tail is another clear feature.
Its back is buff-colored and its belly is white. The tail is longer than the body and ends in a white tuft; its hind feet are also long.
It is solitary and active at night, moving by hopping on its hind legs. It eats grasses and seeds, storing plant food in its burrow; the foods cached change with the seasons.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
