This antpitta has dark rufous-brown plumage, a gray head, and a scaled pattern on its back. In Peru, it is recorded foraging on the forest floor.
It is about 16 cm long. The plumage is dark rufous to brown, with a gray crown and nape. Dark feather edges create a scaled effect on the back. The throat is dusky, and the dark brown breast has a whitish moustachial streak.
Like other antpittas, it forages on the forest floor.
