The Azure-rumped Tanager occurs in Pacific-slope mountains of western Guatemala and Chiapas, Mexico. A Guatemalan study recorded it in humid broadleaf forest and shade coffee plantations.
Its crown is purplish azure, the mantle mottled green, and the rump and uppertail pale sky blue. The underparts are paler, with black scaling on the upper breast.
In a Guatemalan study it occurred in both humid broadleaf forest and shade coffee, with higher encounter rates in forest. Birds used upper vegetation layers; feeding observations in Ficus aurea indicated that this tree is an important food source.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
