This tyrant flycatcher lives in South American grasslands and wetlands. Males are black with yellow around the eyes and on the bill. Breeding has been studied in native tall grassland in the Argentine Pampas.
Males are black with a yellow bill, iris, and eye-rings, and white on the primary feathers. Females have brown and ochre streaks above, a pale throat, and a streaked breast.
It perches on the ground, grasses, posts, and shrubs, and gathers food on the ground or in the air. The account also describes it sometimes running after insects.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
