A rodent of arid southern Africa. It feeds on fresh leaves and other green plants, and builds connected burrows beneath shrubs.
It closely resembles the related Brants's whistling rat. Accounts distinguish it by its ungrooved upper incisors and differences in the pitch and length of its alarm whistle.
It is diurnal and feeds only on fresh plant material, including leaves, grasses, and succulents. Its burrow chambers sit beneath bushes and connect to foraging areas by surface paths.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
