This weaver is recorded in wetlands of western Tanzania and northeastern Zambia. Breeding-plumaged males differ in color from females and nonbreeding males.
A breeding-plumaged male has a chestnut band across the breast and flanks, with black on the forehead only. Females and nonbreeding males are olive above, with an orange breast, yellow underparts, a white belly, and brown-washed flanks.
The source describes papyrus and reed swamps in its western Tanzanian and northeastern Zambian localities. It feeds on grass seeds.
