This ground-dwelling bird has a gray neck and belly, a finely patterned gray-brown back, and a thick black bill. It favors high-elevation grasslands on the eastern slope of the Andes, especially wet grassland.
The neck and underparts are gray, while the back has an intricate gray and brown pattern. Its large size and thick black bill help distinguish it from other tinamous in the genus.
It appears to favor wet grassland, but it is also found in drier grassland and agricultural fields next to grasslands.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
