The large-eared field mouse occurs in the mountains of southwestern China, and studied specimens showed regional differences in coat color.
A subspecies described from part of Yunnan has a brown back mixed with black and grayish-white underparts. Another subspecies is more ochre-colored, so one coat color does not describe all populations.
The southwestern Chinese study region has high mountains and deep gorges, which the authors suggest may separate local populations. They say more genetic work is needed to test the idea.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
