A duck of shallow lakes and wetlands. In breeding plumage, the male becomes a vivid chestnut color.
The breeding male is vivid chestnut. Females are brown, and many males become duller during their fall molt.
Cinnamon Teal move between western North American breeding or molting areas and wintering grounds during fall migration. Researchers tagged 223 birds from 2017 to 2019; 61 supplied enough data for migration analysis, and 56 were used to analyze stopovers.
The team identified 186 stopover sites. Wet agriculture was the most used habitat type, accounting for 29.8% of stopover use points. More than 72% of stopover locations were on private land, and birds also used features such as irrigation ditches and stock ponds.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
More than 72% of the tracked Cinnamon Teal stopovers were on private land, and birds used wet agricultural areas and irrigation features. The study highlights cooperation with private landholders as relevant to maintaining resources used by migrating waterfowl.
