The Canyon Canastero lives in the Andes of Peru and Chile and searches dry montane scrub and rocky ground for arthropods. Its plumage is brown and rufous; the orange chin patch can be hard to see.
Adults have a brown head and breast, rufous folded wings, and a mostly reddish tail. The orange chin patch can be difficult to see. Juveniles are duller and have a thin dark band across the breast.
It inhabits arid montane scrub, rocky areas, ravines, and Polylepis forest. It eats arthropods, foraging in shrubs and on the ground below them, alone or in pairs.
