A large hornbill of forests from Kenya and Angola to eastern southern Africa. It feeds mainly on fruit and nests in tree cavities, which the female seals during breeding.
It has black-and-white plumage and bare red facial skin around the eyes. Males are larger than females and have a larger casque on the bill.
It eats mostly fruit, sometimes adding insects such as termite alates. At a tree-cavity nest the female seals the entrance with mud and other material; the male feeds her through the remaining slit.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
