A small African mammal with a gray back, pale belly, and bushy tail. It forages at night and hibernates during cold winters.
Its back ranges from light to dark gray, while its belly is buffy white. It has short, soft fur, a long bushy tail, and a ring of darker fur often around the eyes.
It is active at night and moves among trees, foraging alone for insects and plant foods. When temperatures drop in winter it hibernates, after eating nuts and seeds to build fat reserves.
