At a Colombian study site, this bird was seen using its recurved bill to split dead bamboo stems and search for arthropods inside.
Its bill is deep, laterally compressed toward the tip, and strongly upcurved. The large, strong hallux and claw were reported to help it grip smooth bamboo stems.
At Agua de la Virgen, birds clung to vertical bamboo, pecked a hole above a node, split dead stems, and searched inside for arthropods.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
