This bird lives in marshes in eastern Madagascar’s humid forests. It has streaked gray-brown plumage and a long, slender tail, and searches for small insects among grasses.
Adults have a gray-brown head and upperparts streaked with dark centers, a buff-white throat and breast with brown streaks, and a long graduated tail with exposed-looking feather shafts. The sexes are similar.
It uses freshwater marshes in or beside humid forest, where reeds, grasses and sedges grow thickly. It feeds on small insects, often staying low and climbing grass stems, and is usually solitary.
