This antbird lives in Amazonian forest. Males are gray with white wing bars, females are brown with rufous wing spots, and the birds forage in wet places inside forest.
It is about 15 cm long. The gray male has small white tips on the wing coverts that form bars and an unmarked blackish tail. The female is brown above with rufous wing spots, a gray-brown head and rufous-brown underparts.
It forages in interior forest wetlands, along streams and in dense Heliconia stands within terra firme forest.
