This small tapaculo occurs in two separated areas of southern Peru. It is dark gray, with a pale line above the eye and narrow ochre-brown bars on the flanks and rump.
The pale supercilium varies in prominence; the dark gray bird has narrow ochre-brown barring on the flanks and rump.
It tunnels through moss, roots, rocks, and bunchgrass, and moves along low branches while pursuing small arthropods.
