This hare ranges across much of Europe and northern Asia, with coat changes that vary by region and climate.
In some areas its coat shifts from brown to white or grey in winter. The timing and pace of the molt are affected by daylight, temperature and snow cover.
It is active at night and rests in a hollow in the ground or snow by day. Its food changes with habitat and season and includes leaves, twigs and grasses.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
