This diurnal squirrel occurs in coastal forests from East to southern Africa. It eats fruit and nuts, and regional forms differ in coat shade and body size.
In a comparison of two southern African subspecies, squirrels in dry forest were smaller and lighter, while those in wetter forest were larger and darker.
It is diurnal, mainly arboreal, and generally solitary. The assessment lists fruit, nuts, and berries among its foods and records tail-flicking behavior.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
