  • Scissor-tailed Nightjar Hydropsalis torquata

The male has outer tail feathers that extend well beyond the body. This nightjar rests on the ground and catches flying insects at dusk and after dark.

  • Black-throated Wren-Babbler Turdinus atrigularis

This elusive wren-babbler inhabits lowland to foothill forest on Borneo. Small groups forage near the ground; a black throat and scaly-looking breast are useful field marks.

  • Buff-vented Bulbul Iole crypta

The Buff-vented Bulbul is Iole crypta. A field record from Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia, places it at a lowland primary-forest edge, attracted to ripe Bridelia tomentosa fruit.

  • Helmeted Woodpecker Celeus galeatus

The Helmeted Woodpecker lives in the Atlantic Forest of southeastern South America. A study reports that its plumage resembles that of a larger, co-occurring woodpecker, and tracked birds used cavities in large trees as roosts.

  • Northern Yellow Warbler Setophaga aestiva

Setophaga aestiva is the migratory northern form of the Yellow Warbler. It breeds in North America and moves to Central and South America for winter; the resident mangrove form is now treated separately.

  • Stone Partridge Ptilopachus petrosus

A small partridge that often holds its tail upright. Red legs and skin around the eye stand out; it uses grassy savanna and rocky ground.

  • Malia Malia grata

Malia is endemic to Sulawesi. It is olive above and greenish yellow below and associated with montane forest.

  • Seychelles White-eye Zosterops modestus

The Seychelles White-eye is a small bird on Mahé. A survey report covering November 2022 to February 2023 describes a dull olive-brown body with a white eye-ring.

  • Paradise Riflebird Ptiloris paradiseus

The Paradise Riflebird lives in forests of eastern Australia. Males court by displaying glossy black plumage, while females are brown and patterned.

  • Citreoline Trogon Trogon citreolus

The Citreoline Trogon has a yellow belly and pale eyes. It searches for food from branches in forests of western Mexico.

  • Swee Waxbill Coccopygia melanotis

A small waxbill with striking red and black tail and bill colours. It feeds mainly on grass seeds and lives along woodland edges and in scrub in southern Africa.

  • Crested Ant Tanager Habia cristata

This ant-tanager has a long, vivid red crest. A 1966 paper based on field observations in 1962 describes its life in stream ravines of Colombia's Western Andes.

  • Stewart Island Shag Leucocarbo chalconotus

In the Otago region of New Zealand, it hunts along the coast and has pied and dark bronze colour morphs.

  • Grey-sided Flowerpecker Dicaeum celebicum

Males have a black head and upperparts with a purple sheen, a white throat, and a red patch on the lower throat and breast. Females are gray-brown. It feeds on fruit and small animals in the forest canopy.

  • Piping Hornbill Bycanistes fistulator

The Piping Hornbill has a black head and wings with white underparts. The account distinguishes three subspecies with differences in the extent of white on the wings and tail. Some taxonomies treat Bycanistes fistulator as a subspecies of the Trumpeter Hornbill.

  • Visayan Fantail Rhipidura albiventris

The Visayan Fantail is a resident fantail of the central Philippines. It occurs in forest and semi-open habitats, and molecular taxonomic work treats it as a distinct species.

  • Purple Sandpiper Calidris maritima

A stocky wader seen on rocky shores in Britain in winter, with distinctive yellow legs.

  • Large-billed Reed-warbler Acrocephalus orinus

A reed warbler with a relatively long bill and tail. Museum research supports breeding in Central Asia, although the precise breeding range and habitat remain unresolved.

  • Black-backed Puffback Dryoscopus cubla

Adults have black-and-white plumage. In the nominate subspecies, males have red to reddish-orange eyes and females orange to yellow-orange eyes. It searches for insects in the canopy.

  • Sumatran Laughingthrush Garrulax bicolor

The Sumatran Laughingthrush lives in montane old-growth forest on Sumatra. It has black-and-white plumage and an erectile crest, and field observations remain limited.

  • Dark Newtonia Newtonia amphichroa

Dark Newtonia occurs in eastern Madagascar. Adults have grey-brown backs and pale, tan-tinged undersides, and the species uses low rainforest and nearby secondary growth.

  • Gray-collared Becard Pachyramphus major
