This entry covers the southern species Patagona gigas. It looks very similar to the Northern Giant Hummingbird, P. peruviana, but differs in breeding range and vocalizations.
It has a greenish back, a pale rump, and rusty tones below. It is very similar in plumage to the Northern Giant Hummingbird and can be hard to separate by appearance alone.
Its principal vocalizations are lower and shorter than those of P. peruviana, and the difference helps distinguish the species. Where the ranges overlap, appearance alone may be insufficient.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
