The Black-backed Oriole is a striking orange-yellow and black bird of woodlands and towns in central Mexico.
Males have a black crown, back and rump, orange cheeks, a black throat bib, orange-yellow underparts and white markings on the black wings.
It forages at different heights in trees and shrubs and may join other orioles.
It feeds on monarch butterflies overwintering in the fir forests of central Mexico, selectively eating thoracic muscle and abdominal fat.
It builds its nest in the middle to upper parts of trees or shrubs.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
