A gull that breeds in large groups in North American prairie wetlands and winters along the coasts of Peru and Chile. Breeding adults may have a pale pink wash on the chest.
Breeding adults have a black head, white crescents above and below the eye, and reddish bill and legs. In nonbreeding plumage the black on the head is reduced and the bill and legs are dark.
It nests in large colonies in prairie wetlands. It catches insects in flight and small fish near the water's surface, then migrates to the Pacific coast of Peru and Chile for winter.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
