A long-legged duck with fulvous and black plumage that feeds in shallow wetlands.
Adults have a mix of fulvous-brown and black feathers, with a long neck and long legs.
On 3 December 2020, an adult Fulvous Whistling-Duck was observed near a rural road in Candeias do Jamari, Rondônia, in southwestern Amazonia. It was feeding and calling beside five Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks. The observers recorded photographs and sound of the bird at an elevation of 86 m.
A reservoir formed by a dam on the Jamari River lies near the observation area; in the dry season, shallow lakes with aquatic plants appear there. The paper described this as the first state record, 946 km from São Fabiano in Mato Grosso and 688 km from Trinidad, Bolivia. A single sighting added a new mapped locality for the species.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
A single adult observation established the first reported Fulvous Whistling-Duck record for Rondônia, Brazil, 946 km from a prior Brazilian locality and 688 km from Trinidad, Bolivia. Continued bird surveys of wetlands and reservoirs can help track where the species appears and how its known distribution changes.
