The Fiji Parrotfinch has a green body with a red head, rump, and tail. It comes to open grassland to feed mainly on grass seeds.
The adult male is green on the body and wings, with a scarlet head, rump, and tail. Its chin is black, shading through dark blue on the throat to turquoise on the upper breast; females are duller.
It feeds mainly on grass seeds in open grassland and ricefields, often foraging on the ground. It also takes insects and spiders from beneath loose bark, and is seen in small groups of five or six outside the breeding season.
