A study of animals captured on Yulong Mountain in Yunnan found a tail darker above than below and showed that animals emitted ultrasound while moving in a dark room and used it to locate a target. The behavioral evidence is limited to laboratory tests.
The 2023 comparison lists U. nivatus among species with a two-colored tail, darker on the upper surface than underneath.
In 2026 behavioral trials, animals moving in a dark room emitted short ultrasonic calls, and tests showed that they used the returning sound and hearing to locate a target. This is laboratory behavior, not a field feeding observation.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
