Rueck's Blue-Flycatcher is known from four museum specimens. Two were collected near Medan in northern Sumatra in 1917 and 1918; the collection localities of the two earlier specimens sent to Paris in 1880 are unrecorded.
Male specimens differ in plumage: one is described as entirely blue, while another has grey-white feathers on the lower belly and vent.
An immature male collected in April 1917 was changing into adult plumage and still had rufous or ferruginous feathers on its head, throat and upper breast.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
