It breeds only on a plateau on Amsterdam Island and normally breeds every other year.
An adult photographed off South Africa was mostly dark brown, with white on the face, hind collar and belly.
It breeds biennially. Incubating adults forage near the island, while juveniles disperse across the Indian Ocean.
