An armadillo whose tail lacks armor. At night it digs into soil and termite mounds with its large claws, feeding mainly on ants and termites.
Its back has movable bands of armor, but the tail has no armor. The shell is dark brown to black with yellowish edges. Large claws and sparse, coarse body hair are also described.
It forages at night, using its large foreclaws to open termite mounds and rotting stumps. Ants and termites are its main foods, and it can bury itself while digging.
