Speke's gazelle is a small gazelle with a black stripe and pale band along its flank. On Somalia's semi-desert plateaus, it responds to danger by leaping high with an arched back.
Its coat is pale fawn, with a black flank stripe and a pale band above it. Dark stripes also run near the eyes and along the muzzle.
A 2022 conservation paper compared 29 threatened antelope species in a matrix designed to support conservation prioritization. Its indicators included risk category, trend, data quality, distribution and protected-area coverage.
The Speke’s Gazelle row listed an Endangered category at that time and a declining trend. It also marked data quality as low and the number of locations as one.
The same row recorded zero protected-area coverage. The matrix brought together information available to its authors then; it was a prioritization tool, not a new population survey.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
The 2022 matrix recorded low data quality, one location and zero protected-area coverage for Speke’s Gazelle.
