A thicket-loving bird with a long tail and pale wing-bars.
White bars mark the wings, and the tail has white outer edges. Males are more strongly red in summer than in winter.
It favours thickets in forests and along their edges. It breeds in Hokkaido and moves to Honshu and farther south in autumn and winter.
