The Large Frogmouth is the largest Asian frogmouth and hides in lowland forest. It perches on branches and catches insects.
It is about 40-43 cm long. The upperparts range from chestnut to light brown, with pale spots on the wings, while the underside is rufous-brown.
It lives in lowland evergreen and swamp forests and sallies from branches to catch cicadas and grasshoppers on the ground. At one Malaysian nest, two adults took turns feeding and covering the chick.
The 2010 Taman Negara nest stood in a branch fork about 4 m above ground and 30 m from a river in lowland forest. It was a compact platform about 7–8 cm across, made mainly of green and dead leaves.
The Taman Negara chick was covered in fine white down when first seen. At an estimated age of about 15 days, down remained on parts of the head and throat, the body had brown feathers and the tail was still short.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
