The Long-tailed Koel is a long-distance migrant. It breeds in New Zealand and spends the southern winter on Pacific islands.
Adults have rufous-barred brown upperparts and a tail nearly as long as the body. The underparts are white to rufous with black streaks, and a white eyebrow stands out on the head.
After breeding in New Zealand, it migrates over the Pacific at night. It lays its egg in the nest of a small bird in the Mohouidae family, and the host bird raises the chick.
