The American pika is a small mammal of the mountains of western North America. It does not hibernate and gathers plants for winter food.
It has a rounded body, short legs, rounded ears and no visible tail. Its coat ranges from tan to grey, and it has black eyes and long whiskers.
In summer, it carries grasses and other plants into rock crevices to make haypiles for winter. It does not hibernate and makes paths under the snow to reach stored plants.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
