This thrush occurs in the mountains of the Solomon Islands. A 2017 field study recorded it in high-elevation forest on Kolombangara; the 2024 Clements treatment also includes the Guadalcanal population in the same species.
Clements 2024 describes the Kolombangara and Guadalcanal populations as brownish-black and montane.
On Kolombangara, the field study found it in mossy cloud forest above 1,500 m. It used the understory; dawn songs came from bamboo and sedge tangles, and one collected bird's stomach contained insect parts and a fruit stone.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
