This chipmunk occurs in western U.S. forests. It also climbs trees, forages on forest floors and nearby chaparral, and nests in tree hollows or fallen logs.
Inland populations have gray upper fur with a marked black dorsal stripe and a white underside. Coastal populations are larger and darker than inland ones.
It lives mainly in dense, moist, mature forest and forages on low forest floors and nearby chaparral. Nests have been found in hollow trees and fallen logs.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
