A nesting study documented four nests of the nominate subspecies in the high Andes of northeastern Ecuador. Newly hatched chicks look different from adults.
At hatching, chicks had orange-to-pink skin and sparse gray dorsal down. Their bills were dull orange and their gape flanges bright yellow.
The four nests were close to the ground in natural cavities among densely tangled vegetation. They were ball-shaped with side entrances.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
