A very small duck that uses plant-rich freshwater areas in eastern Queensland, Australia.
It is a very small duck with a short, black bill.
A study in wetlands of Assam, northeastern India, recorded 203 Cotton Pygmy-geese during breeding seasons in 2006 and 2009. The researchers examined population size as well as survival among adult birds and ducklings. The species’ breeding season includes the growth of young birds after they hatch.
Estimated adult survival was high, at 0.94–0.99, while duckling survival was about 0.1–0.3 during 2007–2009. The gap between the two age groups was a striking result from these wetlands. The abstract also reports that seven of 22 geese killed during 2006–2008 were reported as killed by hunters.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
At study sites in Assam, 203 Cotton Pygmy-geese were observed during breeding seasons in 2006 and 2009; estimated duckling survival in 2007–2009 was about 0.1–0.3. Wetland conservation at breeding sites therefore needs to consider the water-edge conditions used by growing ducklings as well as adult birds.
