A large kingfisher of sub-Saharan African waters, hunting fish, crabs, and other prey.
It has black-and-white markings with chestnut areas placed differently in males and females.
It searches for prey from waterside perches, then dives into the water to catch it. Crabs are its main food, with fish and frogs also recorded.
