This dark-furred shrew has specimen records from mountain wetlands. Its type region is Kahuzi-Biega in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and later collections documented several sites in Uganda.
The account describes the upper fur as blackish chocolate and the underside as an equally dark gray.
Type material came from three nearby Cyperus latifolius swamps at about 2,300 m, as well as another swamp and a waterfall site. Field Museum expeditions in 1996–97 found seven specimens at four Ugandan localities, extending the known range 180 km northeast.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
