The Madagascar Rail is endemic to Madagascar’s eastern wetlands. It stays hidden in dense wetland vegetation and is often heard before it is seen.
Its back and wings are olive-brown with dark streaks, while the face and throat are gray. The breast is vinaceous, and the long, downcurved pinkish bill and red eyes are distinctive.
It mainly eats invertebrates, probing mud with its long bill. It is usually seen alone or in pairs and walks quietly through dense marsh plants.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
