The Chatham Island pigeon is a large forest pigeon now confined to Chatham Island. Its blackish-blue head and breast contrast with maroon wings and a white belly; most birds live in the south of the island.
Adults have a blackish-blue head, neck, and upper breast, maroon wings, and a white lower breast and belly. The red bill has an orange tip; the legs and eyes are crimson. Juveniles are duller.
In spring it often feeds on clover leaves, including beside roads. During breeding, pairs defend territories and may roost conspicuously on dead tree tops or exposed branches.
An extinction-risk assessment has not been added yet.
