This squirrel lives in forests from southwestern Ecuador to northern Peru. Its coat has different forms in lowland and highland areas.
The coastal lowland form has gray shoulders and an orange rump and tail. In highland areas of southern Ecuador and Peru, gray on the belly or tail is more evident.
It is active by day and builds round leafy nests high in trees.
