This small rodent occurs in southern Brazil, Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina. Its back is grayish olive and its underside gray to creamy; it uses forests and grasslands.
The dorsal fur is soft and long with an overall grayish-olive tone. The underside is grayish or creamy; hairs on the feet are banded dark and white, with tufts extending beyond the claws.
It inhabits primary and secondary tropical forest, grassland, shrubland, and transitional habitats. A Paraguayan study recorded assigned specimens in forest as well as grassland, while noting unresolved distinction from the close relative A. reigi.
